About

Photo of Kelsie Leander

Kelsie discovered a love for jewelry and gemstones in high school while working behind the jewelry counter at J.C. Penney. A strong desire to learn more brought her to Shellan Jewelers where she was introduced to fine jewelry, custom design, master craftsmanship and repairs. This experience led her to enroll and earn her Graduate Gemologist diploma at The Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California.

Kelsie worked for 14 years at J. Lewis Jewelry & Appraisals in Bellevue, Washington where she honed her skills in all sectors of the jewelry industry. She excelled in designing, selling, repair consultations, and, of course, appraisals for an elite clientele. This calling has been the inspiration to open her own business back home in the beautiful Skagit Valley.

Outside of work Kelsie loves to spend time on horseback exploring the gorgeous landscapes in her hometown of Bow. She also adores baking with her three year old cookie fanatic son, listening to live music, and enjoying a delicious glass of wine with her friends.

Four Reasons to Get Your Jewelry Inspected

Whether it’s an engagement ring that you wear everyday or a statement or heirloom piece that you break out for special occasions, it’s inevitable that your jewelry will exhibit some wear and tear. Professional inspections and cleanings can help to:

1.

Preserve its aesthetic beauty.

Over time, jewelry can collect oils, dirt, and environmental pollutants which diminish its shine. Gemstones may lose their luster, metals can become scratched or tarnished, and the pieces' overall appearance can deteriorate. A jeweler’s trained eye (and state-of-the-art equipment) can help you guard your jewelry against corrosion and tarnish, allowing for your jewelry to maintain its visual appeal and first-day sparkle.

2.

Detect early signs of damage.

Issues like loose stones, weakened settings, and worn-out components can be hard to detect on your own. A professional jeweler has the expertise and specialized equipment to identify potential problems and make prompt repairs, minimizing the risk of future damage or loss.

3.

Safeguard its value.

Your jewelry is an asset that holds sentimental and monetary value. Professional inspections can authenticate gemstones, verify metal purity, and make sure the piece is in good condition. In addition to getting inspections twice a year, we also strongly recommend getting an updated appraisal every two years.

4.

Gives you peace of mind.

While there are many things you can do to maintain your jewelry, having it checked by a professional jeweler is something that should be done regularly. Whether your jewelry needs to be cleaned, repaired or just inspected, rest assured it’s in good hands with a professional jeweler.

What’s included in a jewelry appraisal?

A jewelry appraisal is a legal document that states the replacement value of a piece. It includes the following factors: weight and content of precious metals, the color, clarity, carat weight, cut, and finish of diamonds and gemstones, and the design and quality of manufacturing of the piece. The value is then determined for insurance replacement, fair market, or estate value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jewelry appraisals are mainly done for insurance purposes to cover your jewelry in cases of loss or damage. It also helps establish the accurate market value of your pieces, which is beneficial if you ever need or want to sell them or settle an estate. They can provide piece of mind by verifying the authenticity and quality of your jewelry especially in the case of valuable or antique pieces.
You won’t know until you ask! We do not charge to simply look at your piece(s) to determine whether you should have them appraised and/or insured.
We recommend that you have your appraisals updated every two years in order to ensure your pieces are covered for the right amount. Jewelry fluctuates in value over time due to changing market conditions. If something happens to your jewelry and the appraisal is outdated, your item may be insured for less than its replacement value. So it’s worth getting your jewelry appraised for financial security and peace of mind.
No, you do not need to drop off your jewelry for appraisal. During your appointment, I will do the evaluation and take all of the necessary information for the appraisal while you wait. I will then email or mail the paperwork to you once it’s complete.
